Listen to a message from Darrel

Darrel, our Lead Pastor since November 2007, is an avid Jayhawk fan who can't seem to stop reminding us that the University of Kansas has both a basketball team AND a football team! Darrel is a native of Kansas and a graduate of Kansas University. He earned his Master of Divinity degree and Doctorate at Seabury-Western in Evanston Illinois and has served churches in Chicago and Kansas before arriving in Texas.

Darrel is married to Julie, who is a career Spanish teacher Darrel and Julie have three children: Joseph, Emily and John. Joseph and John still reside in Lawrence while Emily attends graduate school in Maryland and has recently married. Joseph is a musician with a degree in English Literature and John is a freshman in college. Darrel is an avid reader and sports fan. He and Julie share a love of country music and camping.

As a leader and a role model for the Episcopal Church, Darrel has led the way in demonstrating what our church can become if it is willing to focus not on "growing Episcopalians, but on growing followers of Jesus Christ." He was recognized by Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in 2004 as a recipient of the Merit Award, given by the seminary to an alumnus who has exhibited extraordinary leadership in the church. While Darrel felt honored by the award, he feels an award he was given in 1988 was an even greater achievement. This award was given to him by the honor students of the University of Kansas. He was recognized as an “outstanding teacher and mentor of high school students.”

Darrel is a gifted teacher and preacher. His Bible study lessons and his sermons come with notes that help the listener to better grasp the material presented, and that help deepen understanding afterward during quiet reflection. Darrel’s teachings help Christians to grow in and deepen their faith; his sermons are practical, accessible and theme-oriented. His delivery is bold and energetic; his love for the Lord Jesus is palpable.

Darrel is thrilled that God has called him to Holy Apostles and he brings the same passion and energy that has marked his ministry from the beginning.
